Marvel’s upcoming Captain America 4: New World Order is the Most Crucial Project for MCU

For the future of the MCU, one of the most crucial projects is Marvel’s upcoming Captain America 4: New World Order. At the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers resigned as the man with a plan and handed the shield to Sam Wilson, who spent the events of Falcon and the Winter Soldier trying to come to terms with what it would mean to bear Rogers’ shield. By the finale of his Disney+ series, Sam had donned a gleaming new vibranium costume, his signature falcon wings, and the renowned shield, completely embracing his role as the new MCU Captain America. When Sam Wilson became Captain America, rumors about a solo movie started right away. In 2022, at SDCC, the film Captain America: New World Order was officially announced.

With the possible exception of Black Panther due to tragic actual events, Captain America: New World Order will be the first time an MCU solo movie franchise gets passed on to a different character. Even though the news that Sam Wilson is taking over for Steve Rogers has spread far and wide, Marvel hasn’t done anything to take advantage of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s new name. Despite the many character swaps in Marvel comics, no one has ever taken over a movie franchise on their own in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How people react to Sam Wilson taking over as Captain America will be the first real test of whether or not audiences can handle superhero handovers. The results may affect how Marvel Studios plans to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future.

What We Have So Far From Sam Wilson’s Captain America Is Exciting

Audiences in the Marvel Cinematic Universe were given a glimpse of Sam Wilson’s thought process when he assumed the mantle of Captain America in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The next Cap has already demonstrated he is capable of carrying such a heavy legacy, so when Captain America: New World Order comes released in May 2024, he can get right to work. Sam Wilson’s history in Marvel Comics as the Falcon and Captain America provides the MCU with a wealth of material to draw from when adapting Cap 2.0. In spite of the setup, it may still feel unusual to viewers to see someone other than Chris Evans perform as Captain America in the MCU, especially the more casual viewer who hasn’t been following the Disney+ releases.

Still, the idea that Sam Wilson could replace Chris Evans as Captain America in the MCU is very interesting because it shows that Marvel Studios isn’t afraid to switch things up in order to make new heroes and grow the MCU. Sam Wilson being cast as Captain America is a bold and good step for diversity in the MCU, since it puts a person of color in one of the most well-known superhero roles without minimizing the negative connotations of the name “Captain America.” The fate of the MCU hangs in the balance of Anthony Mackie’s next fight as Captain America in Captain America: New World Order.

MCU Needed to Take a Chance on Captain America 4

It’s hard to picture anyone but the original heroes using iconic superhero identities. Ten years have gone since The Avengers debuted as the first Marvel Cinematic Universe team-up, and many of the original heroes are either getting older or retiring from the superhero game. This will occur more frequently in the future, and new talent will be needed if Marvel is to maintain its flagship intellectual properties. Since Chris Evans’ portrayal of Steve Rogers has become synonymous with America’s patriotic hero, Marvel Studios is taking a risk by beginning this process with someone as iconic as Captain America, and more casual moviegoers may find the transition startling.

Rather than introducing an unfamiliar figure as Captain America, it would be better for a well-established character like Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson to take on the role. The change isn’t as shocking because the story is taken straight from a Marvel comic. In All-New Captain America #1 from 2015, Sam becomes Captain America and leader of the Avengers after an older Steve Rogers gives him the cape and shield. Although the MCU hasn’t always been loyal to the comics, this plot signaled a significant shift that deserves to be told on the big screen, especially after Falcon and the Winter Soldier demonstrated that Sam was scared to become Captain America because of what the moniker signifies.

Captain America 4 can change the future of MCU

Though Sam Wilson’s Captain America may be the first solo film in the MCU to feature a new actor in the main role, it is likely not to be the last, and the success of Captain America: New World Order might open the way for future heroes. For example, Donald Glover’s Aaron Davis has hinted that Miles Morales might replace Tom Holland’s Peter Parker as Spider-Man. Other possible successors have already made brief appearances in the MCU. It’s the same deal with Yelena Belova playing Black Widow 2 instead of Scarlett Johansson, Kate Bishop playing Hawkeye instead of Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel 3, and Monica Rambeau taking over for Danvers in Captain Marvel 3.

With any luck, people will like Sam Wilson’s first solo outing as Captain America in Captain America: New World Order, and Marvel Studios will feel more comfortable passing on the mantle, making sure that the MCU can keep going without getting tired of its key characters. In Phase 5 and beyond, the original heroes of the Infinity storyline will be replaced by new characters. This will allow the MCU to grow and change while still honoring its first heroes. Because of this, it is likely that after T’Challa’s death in the MCU, another character like Shuri will take over as Black Panther in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, not replacing the character entirely but continuing their legacy.
